The CANON FD 50-300mm t4.9 lens is a superb match for many of our vintage primes, particularly the full-frame options, which previously lacked many complementary vintage full-frame zooms. It boasts an impressive 6x zoom range from standard to telephoto, all within a relatively compact design.
Similar to FD primes, this lens released in 1982, delivers excellent performance even wide open, while offering a distinct character often missing in modern lenses. The bokeh features an intriguing texture while maintaining smoothness, and the lens produces beautifully rendered flares, which is a rare quality for lenses with such a broad range.
On the technical front, the lens is parfocal, as expected of high-quality cinema zooms, with no zoom ramping. Close focusing capabilities have been significantly enhanced, and the focus rotation is ample, providing well-spaced focus marks, even at longer focal lengths.
The iris has been upgraded to a 15-blade circular design, eliminating the eight-sided bokeh seen with older models
when stopped down. The lens now features a PL mount, standard 0.8 gears, and a 136mm front diameter compatible with 4×5.65 matte boxes. It is recommended that a 3/8” lens support be used.
