The Sony FE 100-400mm F4.5 GM OSS is the new-generation successor to Sony’s original 100-400mm F4.5-5.6 G Master, rebuilt around a fully internal zoom and focus design that keeps the lens at a constant length and center of gravity throughout the entire range — no more barrel extension shifting balance mid-shot. A newly developed optical formula, including ED XA, XA, two Super ED, and three ED elements, controls chromatic and spherical aberration for consistently high resolution from center to edge at any focal length, while an 11-blade circular aperture delivers the smooth, signature G Master bokeh. The constant F4.5 maximum aperture removes exposure shifts while zooming, and autofocus is up to roughly 3x faster than its predecessor thanks to updated linear motor drive and tracking algorithms, with support for the camera body’s breathing compensation during video capture. Weighing approximately 1,840g, it includes built-in Optical SteadyShot, four customizable focus hold buttons, a dedicated function ring, and a dust/moisture-resistant build with a fluorine-coated front element — making it a serious upgrade for wildlife, sports, and documentary-style production work on Sony E-mount bodies.
